Hennepin Theatre Trust

Minneapolis, Minnesota - September 26-29, 2019

It's our third year and we're adding more events to support our growth. In addition to a Thursday night event, we're adding a number of panels and talks to our already full schedule of screenings.

Bent Brewstillery

Sept 26

Bent Brewstillery

The festival gets started with an informal networking event aimed at the Minnesota film and television industry. Whether you are local to Minnesota or just want to meet the people from the Minnesota film and TV community, come out to Minnesota WebFest sponsor Bent Brewstillery and have a great evening!

Rock Bottom Brewery

Sept 27

Rock Bottom Brewery

As we did last year, we'll have our formal kickoff at Rock Bottom Brewery. Festival founder George Reese will talk about the state of the web series followed by a panel and finally the screenings of our pilot selections. Stay afterwards for drinks and network with the global web series community.

Saturday is the big day! We'll have parallel screening and talk tracks. We screen all Official Selections in the screening blocks during the day. New this year are the panels and talks by industry experts.

The day ends with our annual awards ceremony hosted by Twin Cities news personality Roxanne Battle. But we will head on over to Rock Bottom for some more informal networking afterwards!

Lake Minnetonka Cruise

Sept 29

Lake Minnetonka

We'll wind down with a leisurely cruise on Lake Minnetonka. This cruise is a chance for visiting filmmakers to get a taste of the Land of 10,000 Lakes and mingle with Minnesota filmmakers and our sponsors. We'll get everyone back to dry land in plenty of time to make late afternoon flights.

Submissions for 2019 are open through May 31, 2019. We will be announcing Official Selections on June 15, 2019.

Our panel of three reviewers watch every single entry for a variety of factors that we feel create the best programming for the Minnesota WebFest. In 2018, we received 154 submissions and selected around 50.

We look for diversity in every sense of the term: diversity in genre, diversity in themes, diversity in filmmaker perspectives, and, of course, diversity in representation. Our ultimate goal is to present the strongest lineup of web series possible to the Minnesota community.

We encourage submissions from all around the world, in any language. Non-English web series must contain embedded English subtitles.

Submit your web series to one of the following genre categories:

  • Action
  • Comedy
  • Drama
  • Documentary
  • Horror
  • Mockumentary
  • Narrative Vlog
  • Sci-fi/Fantasy
  • Thriller

We also have a "Best Pilot" competition for those who have developed a pilot, but not a complete series. Do not submit a short film and call it a pilot. We can tell the difference.

We reserve the right to add or subtract genre categories based on submissions.

In addition, you should indicate whether your film fits into one or more of the following scenarios:

  • Made in Minnesota - Web series made in Minnesota or by Minnesota residents
  • Iron Range - Web series made in the Iron Range or about the Iron Range

Minnesota WebFest proudly accepts entries via FilmFreeway.com, the world's best online submission platform. FilmFreeway offers free HD online screeners, unlimited video storage, digital press kits, and more. Click to submit with FilmFreeway.

We haven't yet started taking RSVPs for the festival, but it's coming soon!

Getting Around

The core venue is 900 Hennepin Ave in the theater district of Minneapolis.

Downtown Minneapolis is a 30-minute ride on light-rail from the MSP airport or a 15 minute car/Lyft/Uber/taxi ride. Both Lyft and Uber operate in the Twin Cities.

The light rail line will get you between downtown Minneapolis and downtown St. Paul as well as from downtown Minneapolis to the suburb of Bloomington. That means the Mall of America, the University of Minnesota, Twins games, Vikings games, and both downtowns are rail-accessible. Renting a car is probably a waste of money.

Where to Stay

For the second year in a row, the Hampton Inn & Suites in Downtown Minneapolis is providing attendees of the Minnesota WebFest with special rates. To take advantage of our special rates, you MUST reserve your room online using this link.

What to See and Do

Of course, you're here to watch web series!

But if you'd like to get out and about in the Twin Cities, here are some things to do:

  • A ton of riding and running trails. You can get anywhere in the Twin Cities on bike trails alone without having to fight cars.
  • Paisley Park (the former home and workplace of Prince, now a museum)
  • Theater (Minneapolis is one of the largest theater scenes in the country with the second-most capacity per capita)
  • The Mall of America, the largest mall in the United States
  • Nickelodeon Universe, an amusement park inside the Mall of America
  • The Walker Art Center
  • Minneapolis Sculpture Garden with the big ass spoon (next to Walker Art Center)
  • Strolling the Lakes (Lake Calhoun and Lake Harriet)
  • Minnehaha Park
  • And the legendary First Avenue
  • Minnesota United FC at Allianz Field (Sept 25 vs Sporting KC and Sept 29 vs Los Angeles FC)
  • The Twins and Vikings are away during this year's Minnesota WebFest
  • If you are willing to make a drive of it, the city of Duluth and Lake Superior are 2 1/2 hours north of the Twin Cities.

We will announce the full list of official selections in mid-June. We have, however, been announcing early selections on occasion and they are listed below.

Early Selections

We will announce nominees in mid-to-late summer.

We will post award winners shortly after the event.
